CHOW CHOWS

The Definition of Loyalty

The Chow Chow is an ancient and dignified breed known for its lion-like appearance, dense double coat, and distinctive blue-black tongue. Originating in China, the Chow Chow was historically used for guarding, hunting, and pulling carts. This breed is calm, independent, and often compared to a cat in personality—clean, reserved, and selective with affection. Chow Chows are deeply loyal to their family but tend to be aloof or wary with strangers, making early socialization very important.

Chow Chows are intelligent but strong-willed, meaning they respond best to firm, consistent, and respectful training rather than harsh correction. They are not overly energetic and prefer a quiet, structured environment. Their thick coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting, especially during shedding seasons. While not typically aggressive, Chow Chows are naturally protective and do best with experienced owners who understand their independent nature. When properly raised, they are devoted, steady companions with a calm and confident presence.
